Police detain suicidal man with gun in downtown Springfield

A man with a gun in downtown Springfield threatened suicide over the phone to police dispatchers while inside an apartment building Saturday afternoon.

Multiple police units responded to the incident and blocked off Park Central East between the downtown square and Jefferson Avenue.

The man was inside The U, an apartment building directly across from Big Whiskey’s.

Sgt. Steve Ramey said they set up a perimeter and used “less lethal” methods to get him out. Less lethal methods can include bean bags and tasers.

“We’re taking him into custody; now he is going to the hospital,” Ramey said.The man was taken into custody at 3:45 p.m.Ramey confirmed the man had a firearm.
